World’s - Timeline + Format Updates

Registration Opening

Registration for the 2022 Roundnet World Championship is slated to launch on February 17th. The first registration window will be available only to National Governing Bodies for the purposes of understanding how many national teams will be participating.

This step ensures we can optimize the event for the teams that will be officially representing their countries. It also will help showcase a clear landscape of what the participation will look like. National Governing Bodies do not need to have selected any of their players, but only need to indicate how many teams they intend on sending.

We plan on having a National team registration window of approximately one month, at which point we will evaluate the capacity for non-national team participation.

We are closely monitoring the Covid situation. We will always put players’ safety first and while we cannot predict the future, we are optimistic that we will be able to conduct this event with limited risk come September.

National Team Format

The World Championship is structured with an individual and squad format for both men’s and women’s as well as a mixed competition.

National teams can send 5 men’s teams, 3 women’s teams, and one mixed team. The mixed team can be compromised of players from the men’s and women’s teams or different players.

National Governing Bodies can send as few as one team to compete in the individual or mixed tournament. However, to compete in the squad competition you will need at least 3 men’s teams or 2 women’s teams. These teams are required since you advance through the squad competition by winning the best of 5 or best of 3 respectively for men’s and women’s.

As a rough guide, the individual tournament will consist of pool play which seeds the bracket. From there, the individual tournament results will be used to seed the squad competition and mixed tournament. The events are planned to take place in that order (individual, squad, mixed) with the idea that the individual tournament takes place on Friday, squad on Saturday, and mixed on Sunday. More information and specifics to come.
